You apply by post, email or fax to the office, with a covering letter, the application form (also available in English), a CV with a passport photo and a current certificate of enrolment. You must ask for an extension at least 3 months before your time ends. The standard contract names no minimum stay, and you can give 6 weeks' notice to the end of a month. In almost all halls the rent is a flat rate that includes heating, water, electricity and internet, and you pay the German broadcasting fee yourself. The deposit depends on the monthly rent: €400 (rent up to €300), €500 (up to €400), €600 (up to €450), €700 (up to €600) or €800 (from €601).

How to apply
Students at Hamburg universities (except the armed forces university) and at cooperating private universities can live here, and so can apprentices whose training company has its head office in Hamburg. Interns and school pupils cannot. You apply online up to 3 months before you want to move in, for up to 3 halls or for all of them. The Studierendenwerk says that choosing all gives you the shortest wait. You go on an application list, the Studierendenwerk emails you at regular intervals, and if you do not answer in time you are taken off the list. It names no waiting time, and for 1-room apartments the wait is generally very long, so also consider the category “Zimmer” (room). In a case of special hardship you can be given priority.

You can live in the halls for 48 months at most, or 60 months in halls with permanently lower demand. Time spent in other Hamburg halls counts towards the limit.

How to apply
German and foreign students of 7 Hamburg universities can live here, among them the Universität Hamburg, HAW Hamburg and TU Hamburg. Students who are 30 or older, or who work at an institution close to a university, get lower priority, and the hall does not usually admit students over 35. You collect the application form from the hall administration or download it as a PDF, and you hand it in completed to the hall administration at least 2 months before the semester starts, with a CV with a photo, a statement of reasons, a copy of your ID card or passport, your certificate of enrolment and proof of income. Waiting times are long, and the DRK tells you where you stand on the waiting list on request.
