The HOWOGE states for its flats in general a deposit of at most 3 months' basic rent (Kaltmiete). It told the Senate in 2023 that it signs no fixed-term contracts for its student flats and asks for proof of study or training only when you move in.

How to apply
Only students with a valid certificate of enrolment can rent here. The Senate answered in October 2024: for student places the state-owned companies check each applicant's income. Applicants usually need not show an income of three times the rent. Guarantees count. If your credit rating is not enough, the HOWOGE's tenancy conditions say that a person who can pay should join the contract. The HOWOGE publishes free student flats in its flat search, and you send your request online at the listing. Because several hundred people often apply, an automated lottery chooses who is invited to a viewing. If several then meet the conditions, chance decides.

How to apply
According to what the Gewobag told the Senate in 2023, it lets the Amrumer Straße only to students. In the application it asks whether you have a certificate of enrolment or training. The Senate answered in October 2024: for student places the state-owned companies check each applicant's income. Applicants usually need not show an income of three times the rent. Guarantees count. The Gewobag keeps no waiting lists, and its listings are online only. You apply to a listing through the online portal. Because there are often several applicants, a random draw invites some of them to a viewing by email. Only those who then hand in complete documents reach the final selection.
